May and October are both sold as the clever Ibiza months. That is true only if the trip you want matches the month. May is the runway: the island opens gradually, the sea is catching up and the parties are moving from announcement to reality. October is the afterparty: some of the best line-ups of the year, softer daytime crowds and a shrinking list of open hotels, restaurants and clubs.

May is usually brighter in feel than its numbers suggest: long afternoons, cooler water and evenings that still reward a layer. October brings a warmer sea after summer but a shorter window for dependable beach weather. The official Balearic Islands October guide gives a 23°C maximum, 15°C minimum, 11 hours of sun and around five rainy days; that is pleasant for hiking and eating outside, not a guarantee of a seven-day pool holiday.
Do not choose either month because a generic guide says “the weather is good.” Pick May if your group values certainty that more places will open as the week goes on. Pick October if a published closing party is the reason you are travelling and the quieter days are a benefit.
What is actually open
The party season does not operate on one island-wide switch. Opening parties begin at different times. Closing parties are similarly scattered: Tickets Ibiza’s 2026 guide places the main run broadly between mid-September and mid-October and says each venue and promoter sets its own date. Ibiza Spotlight’s October calendar shows a mixed board: some big-room nights, individual closing events and plenty of “no events today” entries on the same week.

Cost and crowds
Shoulder season can mean better hotel availability and fewer daytime queues, but it does not mean every door is cheap. Opening and closing parties can be premium events because the line-up is the product. Build your budget around the named nights, then use the club entry-cost guide for the all-in calculation rather than assuming the calendar month sets the price.
Which month should you choose?
Choose May for the more forgiving first visit, especially if your group has broad tastes and wants beaches, restaurants and a few nights out. Choose October if you know the party you want, enjoy a slower island between nights and can accept a tighter list of open options.
